Rules for Gdolphin's GOAT tournament tomorrow, review of the Daltoosh Invitational , GLL to pros: "We have failed you"
This is The Final Circle, a newsletter for competitive Apex
The Danish player Gdolphin is hosting a 1 vs. 1 tournament tomorrow (Tuesday, July 21st) at 2 PM EST that should be interesting to watch. Reptar, Knoqd, Hal, Hodsic, Euriece, Snip3down, and tons of other talented players will be going toe-to-toe at the firing range. The rules are below—sorry I couldn’t get a better image. I don’t know if winning a gold armor 1 vs. 1 fight as Wraith on the R-99/Wingman actually means a whole lot, since hardly any fight in pro Apex comes down to that and many pros prefer to run a different combo, but bragging rights are most definitely on the table. And I love the back-alley brawl vibe of the whole thing.
In other independent tourney news, the well-known streamer Daltoosh had his big tournament yesterday, the Daltoosh Invitational. Warning: profanity in the video below.
This was so completely different from any esports event I’ve ever seen. In his tan suit and purple tie, Daltoosh was rocking a serious 90’s ESPN vibe, with commentary and hype music to match. Even if you find Daltoosh loud and obnoxious (which is definitely part of his appeal), I think his tournament, fought for an impressive $5k prize pool, showed how lifeless the official ALGS and GLL broadcasts have been. The Daltoosh invitational was informal, fun, profane, and weird. It felt like a college football tailgate. It was also a great example of how creators with a small team can use spectator mode to put on a show better than the ALGS. We’ll see how Gdolphin’s tournament goes, but it’s encouraging to see a wider range of events opening up in the competitive space.
GLL to pros: “We have failed you”
Finally, in a long post on their website, GLL, the long-reviled organizer of pro practices and the low-paid Masters Summer league, apologized for their failures in the past. Here’s hoping to better times ahead.
